The term "Judo" comes from Japanese, where "ju" means "gentle" or "flexible" and "do" means "way" or "path." Judo's predecessor is Japanese Jujutsu—a traditional martial art focused on close combat techniques. In the late 19th century, as Japanese society modernized and the samurai era ended, Jujutsu faced a decline in popularity and relevance.
Judo was founded by Jigoro Kano, who synthesized various Jujutsu styles, refined the techniques, and created a new training culture that could be practiced as a sport.
Kano’s approach to Judo emphasizes mutual growth and the integration of physical development with character building and values. One of Kano’s key principles is "maximum efficiency with minimum effort," a cornerstone of Judo that remains central to the practice today. Thanks to Kano’s efforts, Judo is now practiced by over 40 million people in 184 countries around the world.
